On September 6, 2012, the NYS Department of Conservation informed the Town that extreme rain from last year’s storms, particularly from Hurricane Irene, saturated the landfill’s cover soils, causing instability which led to a wash-out of barrier protection soils and erosion.  The DEC has begun a repair project, which includes excavation, filling, grading, seeding, and the installation of improved collection trenches.  The DEC points out that the geosynthetic membrane covering the waste remains fully intact, and the waste remains fully contained.  Only the barrier protection soil layer, which is a clean soil layer above the membrane, actually eroded.
